How to prepare the patient for blood sampling
Fast
There is unanimous agreement that it is appropriate for the patient to present themselves for the blood test having fasted for at least 8 – 12 hours. During this period, only small amounts of water can be consumed and sugary drinks, alcohol, coffee and smoking must in no cases be consumed. In fact, these substances can make almost all blood chemistry tests inaccurate or even impossible.
Diet
In the days preceding the blood test, the diet should be as usual as possible, avoiding sudden changes in caloric intake, either in excess or in deficiency.
Drugs
It is recommended to continue ongoing treatment.
Posture
The reported data suggest that preparation of the patient before the sampling should be standardised as much as possible with sampling performed "sitting down".
